Raiders Baseball Vs Crowder

NEOSHO -- The Raiders had allowed eight home runs all season when they got on the bus to go to Crowder. That number has jumped.

Crowder's four home runs accounted for nine of its 21 total runs against Three Rivers on Thursday, and it swept the Raiders, winning 14-5 in the opener and 7-1 in the nightcap.

The Raider offense and defense was handcuffed because of a lack of depth due to injuries. With five pitchers and 11 batters, relief options in the bullpen were minimal and some players are playing in secondary positions.

In both games, the Raiders were tied after three innings, and lost the lead as arms got tired.

"We're putting them in a tough situation, but we only brought 16 players on this trip. I think that's the fewest I've ever had for a four-game series," Three Rivers coach Stacey Burkey said. "By the second game today, we're probably looking at all position players. Even starting."

The Raider pitching staff gave up three home runs in the opener. Adam Brown (1-2) allowed two home runs in the second inning. The homers scored three as part of a five-run frame.

"They've got some pretty good power for a big part of their team," Burkey said.

In the bottom of the seventh, Kyle MacDonald brought the run rule into effect with a three-run shot off Raider reliever Fernando Burgos.

Brown pitched 4 2/3 innings in the loss and allowed eight hits, six walks and three hits batters with one strikeout.

"He settled down after the third," Burkey said. "He kind of wore down and just shortage of arms showed up."

In relief, Burgos gave up two hits and two walks with three strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Lane Crowley was effective through five innings against Crowder, allowing one run and three hits over that stretch.

"Lane Crowley threw probably as great as he's thrown all year," Burkey said. "He got up in his pitch count and got tired and we really didn't have a lot of options as far as making a move to get him out earlier."

Crowder, though, scored six runs in the sixth inning, including a three-run homer by Elvis Peralta.

After the homer, which put Crowder ahead 4-1, the Riders put runners on second and third before Toby Miller came out of the bullpen.

Crowder (35-9, 19-3 Region XVI) scored three more runs, two of which were credited against Crowley, before Miller got out of the inning.

Crowley (2-2) ultimately allowed four hits and six walks with seven strikeouts over 5 1/3 innings. Miller gave up three hits with no walks and not strikeouts.

The Raiders scored five in the first two innings of the opener, but didn't have a runner reach third base after that.

William Stallings scored twice after a pair of RBI singles. Garyn Stewart drove in two runs with a single up the middle.

Ryan Hunter scored and was 3 for 4 with a double in the game. Matt Robbins and Landon Vaughan also scored.

Three Rivers (13-19, 7-13 Region XVI) managed five total baserunners against Zach Jackson after the second inning.

Jackson (9-1), who threw 115 pitches in the complete-game win, allowed 11 hits and two walks with seven strikeouts.

Stewart scored Three Rivers' only run in the nightcap. He reached on a leadoff walk, took second on a wild pitch, and scored on an error at first base.

Both Three Rivers and Crowder had seven hits in the nightcap. Where Crowder bunched four hits into the sixth inning, the Raiders scattered theirs and never had more than two hits in any frame. Seven Raiders were left stranded, including five in scoring position.

Stewart and Christian Deen were both 2 for 3 in the nightcap.

Joey Cooner (6-2) pitched in the win for Crowder. He struck out 12 and allowed five hits and a walk. Michael Marra allowed two hits with on strikeout in relief.
