North Central sweeps Raiders in region opener

Three Rivers College opened up its region schedule by getting swept by North Central, losing the opener 7-5 and the nightcap 8-5 on Saturday at Roger Pattillo Field. In the opener, North Central scored five runs in the top of the first inning. The Raiders chipped away at the lead with two runs in the first and second innings before tying the game in the bottom of the fourth. After a leadoff single, Enrique Madera drove in the go-ahead run in the top of the sixth inning, and he then scored for an insurance run. Riley Hickerson, who went 4 for 7 with three runs in the doubleheader, reached on an error with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, but William Stallings suffered a full count strikeout to end the game.

Lane Crowley (0-1) came out of the bullpen in the fourth inning for Ty Gordon and took the loss. Crowley allowed one run in 1 1/3 innings and struck out four. Parker Dent (1-1) started the nightcap and suffered his first loss. He pitched 4 2/3 innings and struck out two with one walk. He gave up nine hits and all six runs were earned. North Central (3-3, 2-0 Region XVI) led the 9-inning nightcap 6-0 by the middle of the fifth inning. Tyler Mathys then put the Raiders on the board with a solo home run. With the bases loaded in the bottom of the sixth inning, the Pirates committed an error on a fielder's choice at second base, allowing Hickerson and Josh Stevens to score. After North Central added a run in the seventh, making it 7-3. Josh Stevens singled in Ryan hunter, as the Raiders (3-4, 0-2 Region XVI) again loaded the bases. Hickerson scored after Mathys was hit by a pitch, and North Central brought in a new pitcher who got a quick pop up to end the inning with the Pirates still ahead by two runs. They added another insurance in the eighth to set the final score. After one error in the opener, committed by North Central, the nightcap had seven of them, including four by the Raiders. Three Rivers and the Pirates play again today at noon at Roger Pattillo Field to complete their four-game set.
