Lady Raiders ‘fortunate’ for sweep

The Lady Raiders got just enough breaks and big pitches to pick up a sweep. Wiley Lowry picked up a win and her second save of the season as Three Rivers College swept St. Charles, winning 9-1 in the opener and 4-3 in the nightcap. With the sweep, Three Rivers also swept the season series against St. Charles. "We were very fortunate to get the sweep there," Three Rivers coach Jeff Null said of the nightcap. "Ninety nine out of 100 times we lose that game. It was just one of those deals where the breaks went our way at the right time. That being said, we put them in those situations at times."

Lowry allowed three hits in the opener and retired nine of the final 10 batters she faced. St. Charles' lone run was unearned after the batter reached on a Lady Raider error to open the third inning. Lowry (11-9) allowed one walk and struck out three over six innings. In the nightcap, Three Rivers was ahead a run in the top of the seventh when Lowry took the circle. After a groundout, she gave up a single and a double to put the go-ahead run in scoring position. Lowry then got groundouts to third and short to end the game.

Carleigh Burnett (11-9) picked up the win in the nightcap. She allowed nine hits and four walks with five strikeouts. "She had good stuff. She had a couple little runs where she was dominant," Null said. "Then she had a situation where she got a couple on and Carleigh made big pitches when she needed to." The Lady Raiders (24- 21, 12-8 Region XVI) scored in all but one inning of the opener to give Lowry steady run support, and then piled on with four runs in the sixth inning to bring the run-rule into effect. Ahead 5-1 going into the bottom of the sixth, No. 9 hitter Kabrien Rogers singled to start the spurt. Randi Scruggs moved her over with a sacrifice bunt, and Morgan Ledure reached on an error. Lexi Morris drove both in with a single and Courtney Slayton followed with a double and soon scored on a double steal to end the game where the Cougars threw the ball into center field. Morris had went 3 for 4 and drove in four runs. Ledure, Rogers and Slayton all scored twice. "We just played really solid the first game. We played great defense, we played well, we hit well, pretty complete performance the first game," Null said. In the nightcap, Burnett gave up three runs to the first three hitters. Later on, Scruggs reached on an error and Morris hit an RBI double. Morris soon scored on an error to cut the lead to one. Three Rivers tied the game in the fourth on an RBI triple by Ally Hendricks that scored MaKayla Lamphier. Hendricks then stole home to give the Lady Raiders the lead.

St. Charles (10-24, 7-17) had runners on base in each of the final three innings. The Lady Cougars had runners on second and third with two outs, but popped up to short to end the inning. Another popup to short stranded a runner on first in the sixth, and the Lowry got a pair of groundouts to escape the seventh. "It seemed like every time we needed it we made a big play," Null said. The Lady Raiders had just five hits to St. Charles' 11 in the win. "We had so many jams," Null said. "It seemed like four or five innings we were in jams and managed to get out of it." Morris was 2 for 3, making her 5 for 7 for the day, and had a run and an RBI. Ally Hendricks also was 2 for 3 with a run and an RBI. "I think we've learned to compete for a whole seven innings and if we make a mistake, we don't let it snowball on us," Null said. "I think that is the biggest difference from earlier in the year."
