Lady Raiders split home opener with Dyersburg State

The Lady Raiders had to work for two days to finally get their field ready for their home opener. There was so much to do, they didn't have time to get nervous. Three Rivers College won its home opener 7-5 before losing the nightcap 6-2 against Dyersburg State on Thursday in a game that was originally scheduled for Tuesday.

Wiley Lowry led the Lady Raiders (2-5) from the circle and the plate in the win. "She carried us on the mound and at the plate," Three Rives coach Jeff Null said. "She had several, big two out hits." Lowry (2-1) allowed 11 hits in the win and struck out two with no walks. "She was just hitting her spots. She was getting them to hit it off the end," Null said. "She throws a ton of strikes." She also went 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Her single back up the middle in the third inning scored Morgan Ledure and put the Lady Raiders ahead for good. Lowry later scored on an RBI double by Courtney Slayton to make it 4-2. Lowry hit another single back up the middle in the fourth inning score two more. She had to get out of a jam in the seventh after the Lady Raider defense had some hiccups. Dyersburg State scored two and had the go-ahead run at the plate before Lowry got a force out at second for the win. "Our defense let her down a little bit, especially in the seventh, it made it interesting," Null said.

In the nightcap, the Lady Raiders scattered six hits. They also committed two more errors, which is becoming a trouble spot for Null. Randy Scruggs scored in the first and Ledure added a run in the sixth, but the Lady Raiders didn't put together a significant threat until the bottom of the seventh. Down four runs with two outs, Kira Cunningham, Scruggs and Ledure loaded the bases for Lexi Morris, who flew out to center with strong winds blowing in from left field. Morris finished 2 for 3 and drove in both runs. "We just couldn't really get anything going until the last inning," Null said. Carleigh Burnett (0-2) who has so far emerged as the Lady Raiders' No. 2 pitcher, allowed eight hits and a walk with three strikeouts. Dyersburg State scored two runs in both the fourth and fifth innings, helped along by a Three Rivers error.
