Three Rivers hosts softball prospects camp

Tuesday morning, Three Rivers College hosted a softball prospects camp, giving an opportunity for 9th-12th graders to show off their skills.

“Even though it was hot, it was still nice to have some good weather,” said TRC Softball Head Coach Jeff Null. “We had a good turnout for the weather being the way it was, and we had a couple of decent players in the mix. All in all, it was a good success.”

During the camp, Null and his assistant coach, Jason Gwin, started with a drill where the girls worked on throwing for speed.

“We treat those more as evaluation tooks for these kids who are looking to play college ball one day,” Null said, “We try to give them a lot of feedback as far as numbers and kind of where they’re at and where they need to be if they want to play college ball.”

Later on, the girls worked on throwing balls to the cutoff man from the outfield back to the infield, followed by hitting drills.

Null mentioned a few girls he felt stood out during the camp.

“Lindley Patterson from Kennett,” he said. “Katie Akers is another one we’ve got our eye on. There were a couple of others, two younger ones that are going to be sophomores who hopefully come back next year and get a little bigger and stronger. We’ll continue to stay in touch with them and follow them, and hoepfully land them one day.”

With the new school year right around the corner and a new softball season at some point to get underway, Null talked about ways he plans to keep watch on the girls’ progress throughout the season despite not making many games due to his coaching duties.

“I’ll go watch a few games on kids that we are very interested in or if we need to take a second look at them,” he said. “We’ll find them through social media, through their travel teams, and that’s kind of how we stay in touch and kind of develop that relationship, just following them along, and throwing in some words of advice.”

Null plans to run another camp before the school is back in session.

“Maybe late July or maybe one in the fall,” he said. “More opportunities just because we only ended up having one this summer because of the weather. I still have a few kids that couldn’t make it today that want to come try out.”
