Missouri Baptist JV's best run was four points. Three Rivers College's blowout win Friday was evident from the opening tip. The Lady Raiders scored the first 18 points en route to an 86-31 win at the Bess Activity Center. Missouri Baptist's only points in the first quarter were from a stray 3-pointer. It was 18 minutes and change before Three Rivers allowed a bucket that wasn't 20 feet or farther from the hoop and by that time, the Lady Raiders were ahead nearly 40.
The Lady Raiders were dominant in every facet and nowhere more than with their pressure. Three Rivers forced 34 turnovers and grabbed 22 steals for 39 points off turnovers. "That is one thing I think we can do against the region teams, is get out and run against people," Three Rivers coach Jeff Walk said. Ge'Naisha Robinson was helped out most by the easy buckets. She scored six points in the first 2 minutes of play, all easy layups off turnovers, and scored a personal collegiate high 27 points. She was 12 for 16 shooting and had five steals and three assists in 22 minutes. It was the second game in a row that Three Rivers has gotten 22 steals, which is a season high. The Lady Raider defense held Missouri Baptist to 21.6 percent shooting, a new low for any opponent against Three Rivers this season, and the Spartans never scored more than 10 points in any quarter. Walk mixed up the defense at times, working things out on the fly. Three Rivers opened in a 2-2-1, full-court trap and the dropped back into a half court zone. "We've been playing a lot of zone pretty much all the way through. Especially when we are pressing. It is easier to zone press and fall back into a half court zone defense," Walk said. It played mostly manto-man defense in the second quarter, then went back to a zone in the third and had some issues. "We played a little more zone there and they got to standing around. When we switched to man, things sped up a little bit. That is something we'll have to work on," Walk said.
Three Rivers only outscored Missouri Baptist by two points in the third quarter. Walk credited the poor frame to a drop in focus and concentration. "In these blowout games, that's what you have to take from it. You still have to focus, you still have to do the things you are supposed to do offensively and defensively," he said. "I think we did that pretty well three quarter. I don't think, in the third quarter, we came out with the concentration and enough of a focused effort on what we wanted to do." During the easy win, the Lady Raiders showed a little flair with two different behind the back passes to finish 2-on-1 breaks. Michael Everhart drove the lane and dished to Robinson in the first quarter, and Alex Kohler bounced a no-look gem to Markeia Porter in the third. Walk didn't see either play. "As long as the end result is two points. They don't get style points. When we are doing that little bit extra and we miss layups or throw it out of bounds, it is probably a one way ticket to the bench for awhile," Walk said. "Hopefully we can get good enough to do that against region teams. I don't know if we are that good." The Lady Raiders finished with 23 assists. Three Rivers finished with five players in double figures with nine of the 10 active players getting at least 15 minutes of playing time. DeNayia Holmes had 12 points, four assists and four steals. Porter got 11 points, seven rebounds and three steals. Joya Smith and Destiney Williams both finished with 10 points. Smith also had eight rebounds and Williams got two steals.
