Logan turns back Raiders upset bid

CARTERVILLE, Ill. — The Three Rivers Raiders men's basketball team headed to John A. Logan Thursday night hoping to get a little revenge after the Volunteers beat Three Rivers in double overtime two months earlier.

That didn't happen, but the Raiders still turned in a strong effort against the No. 7 team in the nation in a 72-65 loss to Logan.

Three Rivers (6-10) led the Volunteers 19-13 at one point in the first half, but Logan scored 20 of the next 26 points to take a 33-25 lead.

Logan led 40-35 at half

The Volunteers led throughout the second half, but never could put the Raiders away.

Mo Niang led Three Rivers with 20 points, while Hosana Kitenge added 15 points and seven rebounds. "Mo Niang is shooting the ball at a high level," Three Rivers head coach Brian Bess said. "Every 3-point attempt looks like it's going in.

"We have been running the offense through Hosana. He has to get in better shape. We need better play from our bench players."

Lamont Jackson added 12 points for the Raiders.

Curt Lewis led the Volunteers with 17 points, while James Dent had 13 and Isaiah Stafford added 11.

The Raiders return to the Libla Family Sports Complex Saturday evening for a game with Lewis & Clark.

"Lewis & Clark have a new coach," Bess said. "They are really good and compete in Region 24 (with John A. Logan). They have a lot of 6-5 athletes."
