VINCENNES, Ind. — Things imploded in the fourth quarter and took the Lady Raiders' winning streak with them. Three Rivers College allowed 31 points in the final 10 minutes against nationally-ranked Vincennes and lost 78-55 on Monday. "It was one of those games that we had a chance to win and the ball just wouldn't go in," Three Rivers coach Jeff Walk said. "It was well within reach, but we could just never get going offensively in the fourth quarter."
The Lady Raiders (18-3) were down by eight entering the fourth quarter and never got any closer. They were still within striking distance after 4 minutes of rally scoring, but then Vincennes put together a 20-4 run to close out the game. In the closing 6 minutes of play, Three Rivers was 4 for 13 shooting while Vincennes was 5 for 8. Vincennes also had nine free throws late while the Lady Raiders missed their only two attempts. Three Rivers also shot 12 percent worse from the field than the Lady Trailblazers and were 12 for 26 at the free-throw line. Vincennes (16-4), ranked 24th in the nation, was plus-seven on second-chance points and plus-five on points off turnovers, as well. Ge'Naisha Robinson led Three Rivers with 19 points on 9 for 17 shooting. DeNayia Holmes, who was 4 for 7 from the field, added 12 points. With a bigger front court, Vincennes grabbed 17 extra rebounds, but only two additional offensive rebounds. Laurhen Pickett had 17 rebounds and 18 points for the Lady Trailblazers. "They took us out of our offensive sets just a little because of their size," Walk said. "We were getting shots, they just don't always go in."
When the Lady Raiders beat Vincennes by five earlier in the season at the Bess Activity Center, they had 10 fewer turnovers than the Lady Trailblazers and used that to take and extra seven shots. Three Rivers still won the turnover battle on Monday, but this time by only three, and took two fewer shots overall then Vincennes. Three Rivers also shot 10 percent worse on 3-pointers than it did against Vincennes in December and 15 percent worse on free throws. The Lady Trailblazers, meanwhile, were 5 for 14 from the charity stripe on Dec. 6 and 17 for 20 on Monday. Three Rivers led by a bucket at the end of the first quarter Monday, then Vincennes opened the second with a 16-point run. Destiney Williams got the Lady Raiders' first points of the second with 2 minutes left to play, then Robinson added consecutive baskets in the closing 45 seconds to get Three Rivers back within single digits at halftime. Three Rivers, though, never got within seven points in the second half.
The Lady Raiders, who received votes but were not ranked in the most recent poll, had not lost since Nov. 11. They opened the season 2-2 with a pair of three-point losses to Wabash Valley, then won 16 straight. Seven of those wins were by five points or less. "If we thought we were going to win out, that is an unrealistic goal," Walk said. "You'll have games like this unfortunately … or fortunately. I'd rather have it now than later."
